Musicus Heritage Community Concert Series

Hear international prize winning artists from the chamber music world as they perform masterworks within the walls of the oldest example of Western-style architecture remaining in Hong Kong.

Built in the mid-1800s, Flagstaff House on Cotton Tree Drive was the residence of the Commander of the British Forces in Hong Kong until 1978, and was converted into the Museum of Tea Ware in 1984. It was subsequently declared a monument in 1989. This concert focused on the domestic nature of a structure that was once a place where families lived, and took shelter from the turbulent events of 19th- and 20th-century Hong Kong. At the time, families throughout Europe frequently hosted intimate chamber music concerts. In this spirit, the program featured music that was enjoyed in 19th century Europe and that could well have been brought over to Hong Kong as foreigners tried to recreate a bit of their home life in an exotic new place – including Mozart's lively Flute Quartet, Johann Strauss Sr's three Polkas and Brahms’s graceful String Quintet (2nd and 4th movements).

A heritage tour was available for participants to visit facilities throughout the venue and know more about the history of Flagstaff House Museum of Tea Ware, a building in Greek Revival style.
