Finale Concert: A Musical Brew

  • Date & Time
    27 Nov 2016 (Sun) 3:00pm
  • Venue
Hong Kong City Hall Concert Hall
Musicus Fest 2016 ends on a high note with the Finale Concert taking a whimsical turn by paying homage to a festive drink enjoyed since ancient times: beer. The German Beer Purity Law (Reinheitsgebot) was decreed 500 years ago, limiting the ingredients for making beer to water, barley and hops. The program makes a musical pairing much like the way food and wine are paired, except in this case, it is beer ingredients and composers! As the essence of life, water is represented by Mozart, who nourished numerous musical forms and traditions such as operas and concertos. Barley, the key to beer’s bubbly nature, takes the form of Mendelssohn’s ebullient character. Finally, hops are the secret to beer’s complexity, depth and bitterness – and there is truly no other composer who best embodies such traits than the one and only Beethoven. The concert opens with Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture, followed by Hong Kong’s soprano Louise Kwong in two arias from Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro. Finland’s renowned pianist Paavali Jumppanen then takes on Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 23 in A, and the concert culminates with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 4, as we say farewell to Musicus Fest 2016.

The performance is recorded by RTHK Radio 4 (FM Stereo 97.6-98.9 MHz and www.rthk.hk) and will be broadcast on 10.12.2016 (Sat) at 8pm with a repeat on 15.12.2016 (Thu) at 2pm.
