A wonderfully florid program of Belle Époque chamber music by Puccini, Ravel and Franck

For our autumnal musical treat, French violinist Fanny Clamagirand and Hong Kong pianist Aristo Sham, both winners of the Monte Carlo Music Masters, join Musicus Society Artistic Director Trey Lee and young talents Helen Yu and Lee Yat. The program features compositions of shimmering beauty: Puccini’s Crisantemi string quartet, composed in 1890 upon the death of his friend, the Duke of Savoy; Ravel’s impressionistic Piano Trio in A minor, composed on the eve of the First World War; and César Franck’s ultra-expressive Piano Quintet in F minor.

The concerts take place in the intimate salon-like setting inside the Fringe Club, the building of which dates to 1892, a fitting venue for music from the same period, when neighboring Wyndham Street was known as “Flower Street” due to the proliferation of florists in the surrounding area. The area is also close to the Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens and Green Bank, a former private garden where Lan Kwai Fong now stands. A mini exhibition and a special floral arrangement commission, created by veteran floral artist Peggy Li, commemorate these historic links.
