Jockey Club Musicus Heritage Stories: Castle of Traditions

Explore the time-honored monument at Pokfulam with chamber music and more!

Musicus Artistic Director and cellist Trey Lee welcomes the accomplished Finnish virtuoso Antti Tikkanen, co-artistic director of the remarkable Kuhmo Chamber Festival, in this concert series with local string players Aaron Chan, Fan Hiu-sing, and Evette Chiu. Together, they will perform music by Purcell, Boccherini, Onslow and Saariaho, who was voted “the greatest living composer” in a 2019 poll by the BBC Music Magazine. Spanning diverse periods of music history from the Baroque to the contemporary, these hand-picked works illustrate the evolution of how chamber music has sounded and looked on score through the generations.

The stories of University Hall are also told through a special photography exhibition, “Castle of Traditions”, curated by Hiuman Lam, founder of Hong Kong Reminiscence. Join us in discovering the unique history of Douglas Castle, which transformed from a former private residence into the home and workspace of missionaries of the Paris Foreign Missions Society. In their care, the building also notably housed the Nazareth Press, which had printed religious and humanities titles in up to 28 languages.

What’s more, you can explore University Hall and its current function as a residential hall in a post-concert guided tour.
