Jockey Club Musicus Heritage Stories: Fragrance Notes at the Fringe Club
08.05.2024(5 August 2024, Hong Kong) In the Fragrance Notes concerts presented over 6–7 September, Musicus Society transports audiences back to the Belle Époque by bringing chamber music and floral installation together in a cross-art form collaboration, while revisiting the lesser-known history of flowers and greenery in Central district. Weaving a multi-sensory experience, three chamber concerts will take place on Friday, 6 September evening and Saturday, 7 September afternoon and evening at the Fringe Club. The program is funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust.
Fragrance Notes harks back to the Belle Époque, a peaceful period as the 19th century transitions into the early 1910s, in which arts and culture flourished in France and Europe. The program features works by composers of this era: Puccini’s elegiac Crisantemi string quartet, composed upon the death of a dear friend; Ravel’s impressionistic Piano Trio in A minor full of varying colors; and César Franck’s ultra-expressive Piano Quintet in F minor – all exude shimmering beauty.
Enjoy up close, mesmerizing performances by award-winning musicians
In this autumnal musical treat, the Society proudly presents French violinist Fanny Clamagirand and Hong Kong pianist Aristo Sham as special guest artists. They have both won the Monte Carlo Music Masters and tour worldwide as acclaimed soloists. In Fragrance Notes, they will join Musicus Society Artistic Director and cellist Trey Lee, and young talents Helen Yu on violin and Lee Yat on viola. The smaller venue provides the chance to enjoy chamber music in an intimate salon-like setting at the Fringe Underground.
Explore the Heritage of Gardens in Central district through an Exhibition and Creative Floral Art
The Fringe Club is housed in the Old Dairy Farm Depot building, which dates to 1892 and serves as a fitting venue for music from the same period. Back then, the neighboring Wyndham Street was known as “Flower Street” due to the proliferation of florists, and the Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens and Green Bank, a former private garden, were only a short walk away. Complementing the concerts, a mini exhibition tells the story of these historical links of floral fragrance. Furthermore, the Society has invited veteran local floral artist Peggy Li to decorate the venue with original flower arrangements, enhancing the performance space by cultivating nature’s gifts in her unique and minimalist style.

About Jockey Club Musicus Heritage Stories
Funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust since 2019, Jockey Club Musicus Heritage Alive program has promoted music at heritage sites through special performances and outreach activities. The program also enhances the public’s knowledge of Hong Kong’s culture and history by presenting concerts that reflect their heritage settings, giving people an understanding of the layers of a global city — the relationship of a people with historical sites and the stories behind them. In addition to this, it also serves as a platform for international artists to collaborate with our own young talents, to bring their artistry to new heights. This program won the Star of Outstanding Award at the 2022 Global Awards for World Heritage Education Innovative Cases, organized by the World Heritage Institute of Training and Research for the Asia and the Pacific Region under the auspices of UNESCO.
Having met with a positive response from audiences and the community, Musicus is supported by funding from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust in summer 2022 for another three years, with the project named as Jockey Club Musicus Heritage Stories. The new series invites composers and artists from other art forms to take part, presenting new perspectives on historical sites. The series also includes heritage guided tours, artist residencies and school tours designed to benefit concert audiences, students and the community at large.
About Fringe Club
For over 40 years since established, the Fringe Club has become a vibrant contemporary arts space where artists create and show their work, and those who enjoy the arts come to meet and see shows. Facilities for exhibitions and performances here are offered to both emerging and professional artists in Hong Kong and from overseas.
The Fringe Club has been providing an open platform for the arts in Hong Kong since 1983. Performers and artists can show their work without having to go through selection process.
Over the years, by pursuing this policy of open access, the Fringe Club has come to be identified with freedom of expression. This freedom is invariably associated with the pleasure of creating, showing and enjoying the arts without isolating them from everyday life. Food and drinks are also served here to facilitate this communication.
In 2001, the Fringe Club won the HKSAR Government’s first-ever Hong Kong Heritage Award, and its premises was declared Grade-1 heritage in 2009. In 2018, Fringe Club received the HKICON Conservation Award. By creatively transforming this old 1890s colonial building and giving it an entirely new existence and identity, this landmark building has become identified with the energetic and rapid development in arts and culture in Hong Kong.
